Overview
The VISTA-20P is Honeywell's (now Resideo's) most widely installed wired alarm panel. It is a hybrid panel: a circuit board in a metal cabinet that takes hardwired door, window, and motion zones directly, and wireless 5800-series sensors through a receiver or an RF keypad. You control it from one or more wall keypads; the cabinet itself is usually in a closet, basement, or utility room.

| User codes | 48 |
| Keypads | Up to 8 addressable keypads on the keypad (ECP) bus |
| Wireless | Honeywell 5800-series (345 MHz) through a 5881/5883 receiver or an RF keypad |
| Communication | Built-in phone dialer; add an AlarmNet cellular or internet communicator for modern service |
| Power | Plug-in 16.5 VAC transformer and a 12 V sealed lead-acid backup battery in the cabinet |
| Default installer code | 4112 |
Which VISTA do you have?
The model is printed on the circuit board, not the keypad. A VISTA-15P is the smaller sibling (6 on-board zones, one partition). A VISTA-21iP looks almost identical but has an Ethernet jack on the board for a built-in internet communicator. Suffixes such as CN (Canada) and SIA (SIA CP-01 false-alarm-reduction listing) mark regional or listed versions of the same panel.
Error Codes
What the VISTA-20P shows depends on the keypad. Fixed-word keypads such as the 6150 show short codes; alphanumeric keypads such as the 6160 spell messages out.
| Display | Meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| CHECK + zone | Trouble on that zone: a wireless sensor not checking in, a tamper, or an open fire zone | See VISTA CHECK message |
| BAT + zone | Low battery in that wireless sensor | Replace the sensor battery, then code + OFF twice |
| BAT (no zone) | The panel's backup battery is low or disconnected | See replacing the backup battery |
| AC LOSS / NO AC | Running on battery; mains power to the transformer is off | Check the transformer, outlet, and breaker |
| FC / COMM. FAILURE | The panel could not reach the monitoring company | See communication failure |
| dI | Panel initializing after power-up; keypads ignore input | Normal for about a minute; if it never clears, see Troubleshooting |
| OC | The keypad is not receiving data from the panel (open circuit) | Check keypad wiring and that the keypad address is enabled |
| FAULT + zone | That zone is open, so the system is not ready to arm | Close it or bypass it |
| EA / EXIT ALARM | An entry/exit door was still open (or reopened) when the exit delay ended | Disarm, clear with code + OFF, then close the door before arming |
Troubleshooting
The keypad shows dI and never clears
After power-up the panel spends about a minute starting up. If dI stays on, the keypad usually cannot talk to the panel properly. Check that the keypad's four wires are tight at both ends and that its address is one the panel has enabled; two keypads set to the same address also cause this. If every keypad is stuck, power the panel down completely (transformer and battery), wait a minute, and power it back up.
A keypad shows OC or nothing at all
One keypad dead while others work points to that keypad's wiring or address. If all keypads are dead, check the transformer is plugged in and look for a blown fuse or a shorted auxiliary power run in the cabinet.
It beeps after a power cut
Expect AC LOSS while the power is out and a low battery for a while after it returns. If the battery is more than three or four years old, it will not recover. Replace it. See power outages.
FC appeared after a phone or internet change
The VISTA-20P's built-in dialer needs a real phone line. If you dropped your landline or moved to VoIP, the panel can no longer report reliably. The fix is an AlarmNet cellular communicator (see Compatible peripherals) activated by your monitoring company.
The siren will not stop
Enter your user code and press OFF. If the code is rejected, you may be at a keypad assigned to the other partition. Try another keypad, or the master code.
Compatible Peripherals
- Keypads: 6150 fixed-word, 6160 alphanumeric, and RF versions with a built-in 5800 receiver such as the 6150RF.
- Cellular communicators: LTE-XA / LTE-XV, LTEM-XA / LTEM-XV; cellular plus internet: LTE-IA / LTE-IV. See which LTE communicator fits a VISTA.
- Wireless receivers: 5881-series receivers or the 5883H transceiver for 5800-series sensors.
Installation Notes
- Programming: installer code + 8 0 0 while disarmed; exit with *99. See VISTA installer programming.
- User codes: master code + CODE + user number + new code. See VISTA user codes.
- Keypad addressing: keypads use addresses 16 through 23, and each address in use must be enabled in programming. A keypad left at address 31 is in non-addressable mode and will not work on this panel.
- Keypad wiring: four conductors: red (+12 V), black (ground), green (data in), yellow (data out), landed on the matching keypad bus terminals.
- Power: use the 16.5 VAC plug-in transformer specified for the panel, on an outlet that cannot be switched off. Fit a 12 V sealed lead-acid battery; a larger battery gives longer standby if it fits the cabinet.
- Wireless: add a 5800-series receiver or an RF keypad (6150RF/6160RF) before enrolling wireless sensors.
Always put the account on test before opening the cabinet.
FAQs
Is the VISTA-20P still a good panel to keep?
Yes, if it works and has a modern communicator. The hardware is reliable and parts are easy to find. The usual reason to replace one is that it still depends on a landline or an old 3G radio, and adding an LTE communicator solves that for much less than a new system.
Can I add wireless sensors to a VISTA-20P?
Yes. Add a 5800-series receiver or an RF keypad, then enroll Honeywell 5800-series sensors in programming. Other brands' wireless sensors will not work with it.
Does the VISTA-20P work with an app?
Through Resideo's Total Connect service, when the panel has an AlarmNet internet or cellular communicator and your monitoring company enables the service.
What is the difference between the VISTA-20P and VISTA-21iP?
Mostly the communicator: the VISTA-21iP has an internet communicator built into the board, while the VISTA-20P needs a separate communicator module for internet or cellular reporting.
